The park lies astride the Equator in the Albertine Rift Valley in south west Uganda, bordered by the Democratic Republic of Congo in the west. It is situated between two big lakes: - Lake George (N.E), Lake Edward (S.W) and the two lakes are joined by the 33 km long Kazinga channel which bisects the park. To the north of the park are the impressive craters lakes and to the south is the Maramagambo forest and Ishasha sector famous for tree climbing lions. The park has been declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO hence acknowledging it as a key component in the world's ecosystem. The area covered is 1978 sq km of flat and gentle terrain with many diverse habitats .These habitats are a home to:- 95 species of mammals, 600 species of birds, primates,Reptiles (crocodiles, Rock python, snakes, monitor lizards), amphibians and fish. |
